Bruno Peinado

Description

In his works, the French artist Bruno PEINADO (born 1970) manages to intertwine the plurality of commonplace objects and symbols with the aesthetics and content of different cultures. The imagery of western pop culture meets the traditions and symbols of a multi-ethnic society, which PEINADO’s multinational upbringing makes him feel akin to. The rigor and static of icons, formed by society, is lifted, destroyed and ironically remixed. PEINADO comments on this as follows: “My logic is one of re-combination; the world is a clashing of images. My purpose is to destroy purity.“ Following this principle of recombination PEINADO creates a hybrid world, which dismisses western culture. He not only refers to literature, art history, cinema, pop music, advertisement and television in his works, but by flipping their symbols he even reverses their meaning.

After exhibiting in the Ursula Blickle Foundation, the Kunsthalle St. Gallen, the Palais de Tokyo, as well as in several Biennales (Lyon, São Paulo, Istanbul), new works by Bruno PEINADO, which just have been displayed at the solo exhibition „CASINO INCAOS – Baroque Courtoisie“ at Casino Luxembourg will be shown, for the second time, to an Austrian audience in the gallery Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna. Inline with the upcoming religious event the Candlemas, which commemorates to the presentation of Jesus at the Temple, this exhibition, called “All Tomorrow’s Parties“, presents a series of light sculptures.

The church festival Candlemas replaces the abolished heathenistic folk festival called Lupercalien, which was dedicated to the moment in the year, when days starts to become longer. Comparable to the assimilation of heathenistic customs by Christianity, Bruno PINADO for example alienates a hanging lamp by placing it like a basketball in a basketball hoop or placing the neon sign „Great“ reversed. In his works PEINADO not only flips the letters but also twists their meaning and their message. By playing with the rather meaningless word „Great“, a symbol of American Popculture or the slogans “There’s no pleasure in / having nothing to do / the fun is in having lots / to do and not doing it “ Bruno PEINADO highlights the opulence of nowadays society and criticizes the catchphrases of consumerism.
