Sanell Aggenbach is a South African artist born in 1975 in Cape Town, where she currently lives and works in the Woodstock neighbourhood. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the University of Stellenbosch in 1997.
Aggenbach’s artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture and printmaking. Her work mainly explores the intersections between history and personal narratives, reflecting on the process of remembering and interpreting. Since 2003, she has increasingly focused on feminist themes, deconstructing traditional female motifs with subtle irony and humour.
In her work, Aggenbach combines traditional painting techniques with sculptural elements and typically female handicrafts such as sewing and tapestry. Through this approach, she creates works that explore nostalgia, historical myths and personal memories, often utilising the playful and absurd to explore deeper themes.
