Georg Haberler has been intuitively drawn to working with textiles ever since his first artistic attempts. During his painting studies in Vienna and Hamburg, he increasingly dealt with the canvas as a carrier material and finally achieved a creative breakthrough during the pandemic: Through the dynamic creative process with the sewing machine, through which the canvas slides and is embroidered, Haberler was able to shed the dominance of the rational and finally surrender to the freedom of his own intuition and imagination. This process freed him from his own expectations and enabled him to develop his artistic language.
With needle and thread he explores the surface and gives it a completely new structure. Color consciously fades into the background, and he consistently colors his thread compositions later – from the back of the canvas. This approach gives his works a sculptural and spatial quality and particularly emphasizes the fullness and three-dimensionality of his embroidery art.
His works are characterized by an overwhelming wealth of ideas and living elements, which sometimes almost take on a life of their own: charming animals, people and plants merge with various driving devices, architectural and machine forms to shape a fascinating, detailed network. Haberler’s visual worlds appear like a complex hidden object picture that invites the viewer to continue spinning the stories themselves. The narrative structure is deliberately designed to be open – each viewing allows individual interpretations and inspires you to create your own stories.
“In my opinion, the viewer is the most important person in my work,” says Haberler.
